But these are the things we need to figure out for ourselves so we can walk the love walk. Marital issues will not get the attention they deserve when couples do not apply the proper foundation to get the matter resolved appropriately. Therefore, more problems arise, resentment ensues, hearts become hardened and divorce settles in. At this point, the grass can seem greener on the other side of the fence. But is it? No! It's only a mirage. A typical scenario of a self-based marriage goes something like this. Couples wonder around aimlessly to find contentment, and some sort of direction to stabilize their chaotic lifestyle. Something is missing from their life and the more they try and sponge the missing pieces off their spouse, the more that spouse feels confined, confused and empty. Marriage needs giving of each other, not sponging off of each other. When we constantly only want to get rather than give, we are literally pulling the life out of our spouse. After awhile, neither spouse will get the love they so desperately need, and eventually one or both will seek outside influences to fill their emptiness. Whether through infidelity, over-eating, pornography, drinking, negative emotions, etc. But these things pull couples even further away from each other emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically. I encourage you to think about and do those things that you can do for the marriage that will pull you closer to one another. Working on ourselves is the first step towards being a loving and giving person. Ask yourself. What do I value about myself? Is it my job? My career? My looks? My house? What about valuing yourself as a child of God and then working on being that person? Ask yourself? What do I really need for myself to make me happy? Attention from others, love from others, food, drugs, alcohol, another spouse? No, these things don't make us happy and content! These things control and overpower the person we are. Don't you see? We put so much trust in these material and physical possessions and feelings, and then use them for anchors when times are tough. What has God made for us? What anchors can we apply into our marriage that is made by God? The Rock of Love is a living and beautiful part of our walk in life, if we so accept it. Everything else is dead. Ask yourself. What do I believe in for my marriage? Divorce? Infidelity? Trust? Respect? Commitment? Do I believe in what I see in the world to be right for my marriage? What is my real purpose for my marriage? What responsibilities and duties does God want me to fulfill for my marriage? If you are a Child of God, then choosing to love God first would and should be your first priority, which is taking care of yourself! Anyone in the world By Jonathan Johnson Many factors affect how often you must water your plants. Some of these factors are heat, humidity, wind, season, soil, and type of plant. The following guidelines pertain to plants recently transplanted into the garden. Remember, when transplanting, always be sure the plants were recently watered and are well hydrated before you put them in the ground. Water should be applied around the base of the plant and outwards a distance that is at least one and a half times the distance of the farthest reaching branch. Water enough so that the soil will become wet throughout the entire root area. This will require a slow, soaking irrigation. Water should be applied only as quickly as it can be absorbed by the soil. Keep in mind your deepest roots will be located below the trunk and limbs of the plant. This area will require more water than the shallower roots located near the end of your farthest watering area. Root depths are commonly 6-12 inches for annuals, vegetables, and lawns: 12 24 inches for perennials and shrubs; and 28 36 inches or more for trees. Newly planted plants need to be watered more frequently than established ones. It is hard to schedule watering frequency. It is a good idea to check newly transplanted plants every day or at least every other day. If the plants show any sign of wilting, or if the soil begins to dry out (scratch down below the surface to check it), it is time to water. As the plant becomes established, you will not need to water it as frequently, but continue to monitor your plant and soil conditions for the first growing season. Once a plant has become established most recommendations suggest it will need at least 1 inch of rain (or watering equivalent) every week during your growing season. Fast growing plants will require more water than slower growing plants. Keep in mind soil type will greatly affect how often you will need to water your plants. Sandy soils do not hold much water, so when you irrigate or when it rains, most of the water percolates rapidly down and out of the root zone. Plants grown in sandy soils will need to be watered more frequently. On the other hand clay based soils hold more moisture which remains available to the plant for longer periods of time. Plants growing in clay soils require less watering. Hot, dry, or windy weather increase the need for extra irrigation. Newly transplanted plants are most vulnerable and will need more frequent waterings, but these conditions are tough on all plants. Pay attention to your entire garden and water as necessary. It is best to water during the early morning or late evening, but if a plant needs water, water it regardless of the time of day. As cooler shorter days approach in the fall you can start backing off you watering schedule. However, windy conditions, even in the winter time, rapidly deplete moisture in plants. Giving your plants an occasional a drink even when they are dormant, helps insure gardening success. Signs of "Over Watering": Too much water drowns the roots and deprives the plant of the food and moisture that the roots are supposed to supply. The first signs of too much water show up in the roots. They become brown and mushy. This is hard to see in the garden, but easy to check with plants grown in containers. In the garden, symptoms of over watering are yellow leaves (generally all over the plant) which will soon drop off. Once this occurs, it is often too late to save the plant. Signs of "Under Watering": Too little water deprives the plant of the moisture needed to grow and live. First signs are a slightly washed out color in the leaves, followed by wilting, starting with the youngest and tenderest foliage. If wilting is severe enough, damaged leaves with brown crisp edges may remain even after watering. Very severe wilting in not reversible and plants will die. If you are in doubt about how much to water use the scratch method to help judge the situation. Using a hand trowel or other implement, scratch below the surface of the soil and check the soil in the root zone for moisture. Moist soil tends to hold together when squeezed, dry soil typically will fall apart. If you judge the soil is too wet stop watering for a while and let the plant dry out. Anyone in the world By Sandra Dinkins-Wilson Are you interested in creating a butterfly garden? Perhaps it is for the purposes of providing some habitat for butterflies in your area? Maybe you just want to attract them to your garden so you and your children can delight in their antics. While there are several things you must consider when building a butterfly garden, a major consideration is providing shelter for them. Butterflies need shelter from both wind and rain. In winter, if you are lucky enough to have over wintering adult butterflies, they will need shelter for hibernation. So as you begin to create your butterfly garden, you will need to provide shelter. To begin your butterfly garden give consideration to the direction of the prevailing winds of your area. In the US, mostly the prevailing wind is out of the Northwest but check in your area to be sure. In my area, we can at times get a mean upsloping eastern wind but our normal winds are western winds. If you do have a prevailing wind from the Northwest, this means you will want to provide some type of windbreak along the northern or northwestern side of your butterfly garden location. If you are creating it on the southern side of your home, you may already be one step ahead. You will simply need to continue your windbreak along the western side of your home. A windbreak can be created with trees and shrubs, walls and fences or even a stack of firewood or rocks. You will want the taller plants to be on the northern or northwestern side of your butterfly garden. If at all possible, create a protected area for the butterflies by putting the tallest trees, shrubs or whatever on the north side and progressively smaller plantings coming around to an almost open southern side which will allow the sun to shine in. It may be easier to picture this as a circular area. It does not have to be circular but any shape you desire will work as well as long as there is a windbreak towards your prevailing winds and it allows plenty of sun to shine in from the south for the butterflies to bask in. The plantings and structures you use to prepare the "bones" of your butterfly garden will provide shelter from rain as well as from the winds. Butterflies will hide from the rain under leaves of the vegetation as well as the eaves of your home and any little nook or cranny they can find. If you use hard structures such as fences or trellises, add plants such as passion flower or pipevine that will grow up or along these structures to further your butterfly garden goals. Not only will you be providing shelter but, in the case of the stated plantings, you will also be providing host plants. Choose nectar-providing shrubs as your living windbreaks. Follow these tips and you will have a great start on providing a little habitat for butterflies within your own landscape.
