Effective Marketing on a Shoestring Budget
by bryana starnes - Thursday, 14 February 2008, 05:09 PM
Anyone in the world
By Mat Kelly Many business owners would give their left arm to have the same brand recognition as Oprah, Microsoft, McDonalds, Starbucks or Amazon.com. But you dont need the marketing budgets of these behemoths to promote your company and get your piece of the pie. A creative approach to self-promotion will put you face-to-face with your prospects and, properly executed, can help you become a well-known name. The first step is to focus your marketing efforts (otherwise known as target marketing). A topic that has nearly been discussed to death, target marketing is essential for just about every company, no matter how large or small. You dont see advertisements for Oprahs show on ESPN because thats not her target market. And while a household name like McDonalds appeals to almost everyone, their advertising efforts tend to be targeted toward specific marketing trends. Their latest marketing campaign is focused on the youth market that, these days, have much more of their own money to spend than the youth market of yesteryear. If you are faced with a limited marketing budget, you must be creative and persistent in your efforts. Here are a few ideas that are alternatives to the more traditional, higher-priced marketing approaches that will get your company some exposure and wont break your budget. Networking Were all familiar with print, radio and television advertising. And as the innovations of cable and the Internet have become more prominent in our lives, infomercials, banner ads and other Internet advertising avenues have been added to the mix. However, if you really want to connect with your target market, getting out and meeting them through networking is probably the best way to do it. Joining professional organizations such as your local chamber of commerce or civic organizations such as your area Rotary club will put you in touch with the movers and shakers of your community. These people are likely to become colleagues that you can learn from as you watch them grow professionally and you watch your company grow as well. And while they may be able to connect you with potential clients and opportunities, you should approach these relationships prepared to give without motive. If you join these organizations with a whats in it for me? attitude, you will likely be spotted as such and left out in the cold. Partnerships and Sponsorships Another great way to not only get your name in front of your prospects, but also learn more about them, is through partnerships and sponsorships. When a community is unfamiliar with your company or organization, one of the easiest ways to build trust is through a partnership with a more established and successful company. But keep in mind youre going to need to be offering a product or service that is so useful to their customer base that your partner is willing to risk their reputation by endorsing you. If you dont partner with a well-established firm, at least partner with a non-competitor that offers services complimentary to yours. If you sell shoes, and your partner company sells mortgages, that wont make sense to the customer and will raise their suspicion of you. Supporting community and civic organizations through sponsorship is another way to reach your audience. Your efforts can range from the local little league baseball team to a fundraiser for any sort of worthy cause. Be creative in deciding what to support anything from your local chapter of the American Heart Association to an organization that raises money for any needy population in the area abused women and children, the homeless, the mentally ill, disaster victims, etc. This offers a two-for-one opportunity for your company; a chance for you to satisfy your civic conscience by getting involved with that organization that youve always wanted to volunteer with, and you get exposure for your company at the same time. A Trade Show on the Cheap Trade shows are the ultimate in target and network marketing. But when you begin to calculate the cost of your trade show display, the fees for attending the show, the cost of travel to the show, hotel accommodations and the cost of someone to run the booth, you may be ready to scratch this marketing tool off of your list. But there are options to keep your expenses low. One area where you can curb your trade show attendance cost is in the price of the trade show display. But be careful your exhibit will say a lot about you and your company; you want to save money, but not at the expense of quality. Most companies offer low-cost trade show display options, such as table top displays. They are easily transported and assembled, and typically range between four and eight feet in size. While the more elaborate custom trade show displays can cost several thousands of dollars, you can purchase the table top versions for only a few hundred dollars. Above and Beyond Customer Service Before you roll your eyes, because weve all heard the speech about providing outstanding customer service, keep in mind that these days excellent customer service is hard to come by. Everyone talks about it, but nobodys doing it. So, why dont you be one of the few who actually walks the talk? Ask for customer feedback and actually act on the feedback youre given. Do something extra for the customers who do a lot of business with you. Recognize and thank your customers during the holiday season. Look for other opportunities to extend beyond the customers expectations, because going the extra mile is an investment in your companys future success. Economical marketing can be easily achieved it just requires some innovation and concentrated effort. Start with these ideas and others are sure to come forth and then you can expand your budget to include more traditional marketing if you want. Weight Loss Recipe: Avocado, Walnut & Crispy Bacon Salad
by bryana starnes - Thursday, 14 February 2008, 04:29 PM
Anyone in the world
By Kim Beardsmore Losing weight doesn't have to be boring when you focus on bright, colourful meals. What does this mean? Simply by making sure your plate reflects a range of colours, you'll naturally create more balanced and healthful menus. Not everyone has the time or the patience to count calories, but assessing the colours on your plate is something anyone can do - and it only takes an instant! Why is colour important? Many fatty and caloric foods, such as dairy products and startchy carbs, are beige or brown. When there are too many of these drab colours on your plate, weight gain is almost certain. That's because these beige foods often are high in calories and can leave you feeling hungry later. A cup of beige or brown beans can be over 200 calories....but a cup of red or green vegetables is under a hundred! Add fresh greens, deep purple-reds and bright yellow-orange to a meal, and water the nutrient content go up, while calories go down! Plus, you'll get more enjoyment from eating when there's a variety of colours and flavors on your plate. Although these ideas may sound whimsical, they're grounded in scientific fact. Dr David Heber, renowned nutritional expert from University of California, Los Angeles established the role of colour in his book, "What Color is Your Diet?" So, next time you visit the refrigerator, think colorfully. And remember to mix, not match! To get you started on the color plate, here is a deliciously interesting salad: Avocado, Walnut & Crispy Bacon. Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking: 8 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 7oz/200 g rindless bacon, chopped cup walnut haves, roughly chopped 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil cup fresh lime juice sale and ground black pepper 6oz/150g baby spinach, trimmed and washed 3 ripe Roma (egg) tomatoes, diced 1 large ripe avocado, halved, peeled, seed removed and sliced 1 small red onion, very thinly sliced Directions: 1. Heat a non-tick frying pay over medium high heat. Add bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes or until crisp. Remove bacon and set aside to cool. 2. Add walnuts to pan and cook over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes or until lightly toasted. Remove with a slotted spoon to a plate and set aside. 3. Add oil and lime juice to pan. Season with salt and pepper to taste and stir to combine. 4. Combine spinach, tomatoes, avocado, onion, bacon and walnuts in a large serving bowl. Pour warm lime dressing over salad and toss gently to combine. Serve immediately. Kim Beardsmore is a weight loss consultant whose business operates across 60 countries. 8 Choices You Must Make to Live Successfully With Chronic Illness
by bryana starnes - Wednesday, 13 February 2008, 04:09 AM
Anyone in the world
By Lisa Copen It's all about choice. The doctor may tell you what your body is doing or how it may react in the future, but you still have choice to make that will impact everything else about your life. [1] Recognize that the illness is chronic You will swim through the phases of grief for the rest of your life, because with a chronic condition comes new limitations as the illness progresses. Don't be too hard on yourself; reach out to others, build up friendships with those that understand, pursue new hobbies that get your mind off of the illness, take a second look at your faith and how this effects it. [2] Be a good advocate for your health You know your body better than anyone else and the likelihood is that you will get tons of well-meaning advice from both friends and strangers. Be discerning in what you choose to follow and what you choose to let go. Kindly thank those that offer their advice, but don't make any promises or feel obligated to try anything they offer. [3] Do research on new medications and alternative treatments Be wise in how much money you invest in alternative treatments; don't continue to dump money into alternative treatments when the practitioners continue to offer promises and testimonials. Recognize that alternative supplements are not regulated by the FDA and may not be as effective as they claim or even safe. [4] Choose your doctors carefully Ask for referrals. Find a doctor who your personality clicks with. Don't be demanding or act like you know more than s/he does, even if you occasionally do. Build a team of doctors that is willing to work with you to give you the best quality of life. [5] Refuse to give into bitterness When you're seeking validation for your illness, especially when it's invisible, it's easy to get caught up in the blues of "but they don't understand!" and "they are so lucky and they don't even appreciate their health!" Defy the tendency to feel sorry for yourself and instead choose joy. [6] Step outside yourself Even if you aren't happy about the diagnosis, in time you will witness others going down this same path and you may have a desire to reach out. Follow that passion! Reaching out to another person who is dealing with similar circumstances can be healing for both of you and will give your illness purpose, even on the days with great physical pain. [7] Get a grip on guilt It's natural, especially if you have a family, to feel intense feelings of guilt that you are bringing everyone down with you. Recognize that this illness is not a judgment or punishment. it simply is. You may not be able to choose to live without it but you can choose how to live with it. Your kids and spouse are watching to see how you will handle this. Make them proud. [8] Allow yourself to be vulnerable On the flip side, you don't have to be a steel magnolia and always keep a stiff upper lip. Find a friend, a mentor, a buddy - - someone who you can let down your frustrations, struggles, hopes and fears with. You'll find that illness may leave you with fewer friends than before but the quality of relationships may be much more precious. We're all sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. Chronic illness is an unfortunate part of life we've been dealt, and how we choose to live with it is up to us. Allow yourself to have a "pity hour" now and then, but don't fall into the trap of having "pitty years." You may not be able to control your illness, but you can control your attitude. And a good attitude will make your illness much easier to cope with. Having troubles with pat answers? Find out how to really change in Lisa's new book, "Why Can't I Make People Understand? The Hidden Dangers of Belly Fat For Women
by bryana starnes - Monday, 11 February 2008, 06:49 PM
Anyone in the world
By Heather Picken What is viseral fat? Visceral fat is fat that is deep inside the abdomen, around the organs. Visceral fat, unfortunately, is nowadays thought to be much more significant for disease risk than subcutaneous fat. Scientist have linked viseral fat to metabolic diseases like diabetes. For women, a waist size of more than 35 inches signals potential trouble. What about liposuction to get rid of it? Actually, The New England Journal of Medicine did a study in 2004 about removing the viseral fat in women and they found out even though large amounts were removed it there were no health benefitsno changes in cholesterol, blood pressure or other risk factors for heart disease. That is why it is crucial to be proactive and do something about it right now before it's too late. How you get rid of it? Eating fat-burning foods, which include lean proteins, fibrous carbohydrates, and whole grains. Another thing you can do is decrease the saturated fats (think butter and high fatty foods) You also want to take your EFA's (essential fatty acids) this will help in get rid of viseral fat (think fish oil and flaxseed oil). Also, weight training will help your body to build more lean muscle. Make sure your workouts are fat-burning, don't make the mistake of just going through the motions during your workout, otherwise you will never get rid of the viseral fat. What about walking? Walking isn't really going to do much to stimulate major fat loss, especially the viseral fat. You need to do interval cardio, if your serious about improving your health and looking better. I've seen too many women just focusing on walking and not even paying attention to the resistance training. Remember the more lean muscle you have, the leaner you will be. If your not eating enough to support your lean muscle it will be hard to get rid of the viseral fat as well. Most women who get stuck and reach what they call a plateau are guilty of this. Viseral fat goes way beyond just looking better, commit to becoming healthy now. Heather Picken, ISSA/P.C.P.T is a Women's Over 30 Metabolic Specialist & Motivational Coach. Electric Toy Trains History - From The Beginning
by bryana starnes - Sunday, 10 February 2008, 08:14 PM
Anyone in the world
By Paul Wonning Toy trains had their modest beginnings in America in the New York loft of Joshua Lionel Cowen in 1901. This simple train, really a single motorized gondola car, has evolved into the most popular hobby in America and Europe. These first trains were battery powered, as most homes didn't have electricity. They were also larger than most modern indoor trains. Mr. Cowen named his train company using his middle name - Lionel. Other manufacturers soon were making electric trains , and many different gauges of trains began to appear. The term gauge refers to the distance between the rails. Mr. Cowen was a shrewd businessman, and he saw the value of all manufacturers using the same gauge of track. He used his pre-eminent position to force his 'Lionel Standard" gauge on the other manufacturers. This gauge is roughly equivalent to the modern G-scale train. This scale is too large for most peoples homes. The next milestone in the history of the electric trains occurred in 1915. By then electricity in homes was becoming more common, and trains designed to run on household current were more practical. Lionel introduced the smaller three rail O gauge which is still in use and popular today. This gauge was more suitable for use in the home, and the use of household current made operating accessories possible. During this period, Lionel was the premier train-maker, but not the only one. The American Flyer company came into being in 1907 with the partnership of two gentlemen named William Hafner and W. O. Coleman. They started with production of clockwork trains. They experimented using lithography, or 'tin type' to manufacture lower cost trains. In 1914, Hafner dissolved the partnership to start his own company. He began to produce the American Flyer electric train, first in O gauge, and later in Standard gauge. The A. C. Gilbert Company purchased American Flyer in 1938, and switched production to HO and O gauge trains. World War II stopped all toy train production. After the war, 1946 saw the introduction of the Flyer S gauge trains. American Flyer lasted almost twenty years, producing a good quality product. In the end they just couldn't compete with Lionel, and the company ceased production in 1966. Lionel bought the production rights in 1968, and still produces a small amount of Flyer merchandise each year. Lionel and American Flyer were popular and good quality trains, but they were pricy. Not everyone could afford them. Louis Marx obtained the Joy Line brand of wind-up trains from a Pennsylvania toy company in 1938. This was a fairly cheap line of trains, and the Marx Company grew their own line of trains from this beginning. These trains were more affordable, and were popular until the company went out of business in 1975. Recently, the Marx train line has been revived, and are again available to run and collect. Toy trains saw their beginnings at the start of the 20th Century. At the start of the 21st century, trains are still popular. Kids love them as toys, and as a hobby adults find the magic is still alive. Thomas the Tank on TV and Lionel are reintroducing a new generation of children to the fun of toy trains. Trains are available in a large variety of scales, styles, and types. There is sure to be a train suitable for you. Treat yourself to the pleasure of a toy train today! Dating Test - How Romantic You Are?

By CD Mohatta Most of the people on the dating scene are looking for great partners. Someone who will fulfill the vacuum in their life and heart. Someone very smart, intelligent and loving. In the age of competition it is not easy unless you show innovative approach. Don't take me wrong. I am not asking you to create a drama or anything of that type, but creating mood that will get you your heart's desire. How romantic are you? Have you tested yourself on that? Let me ask you a simple question. Does a rainbow look romantic to you? What does a butterfly make you think of? What happens when you walk on the fallen flowers in a garden? Does watching sunset make you think of a poetry? Do you read poetry? Do you enjoy it? Have you ever stared at the eyes of anyone of opposite sex without uttering a word for a minute? If you have done any of these , you are a romantic at heart. You will win the game. Most of us believe that dating means expensive dinners, visiting theatres, watching movie and so on. You can never create romance at any of these places. For making your partner feel romantic and passionate, you have to go to a location where nature dances with joy. You have to feel part of that nature and enjoy the love that nature gives without asking anything in return. Sing a small poem to your date and you make your day. Marketing in the Face of Disaster: 7 Guidelines for Success
by bryana starnes - Saturday, 9 February 2008, 09:05 PM
Anyone in the world
By Ellen Britt In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, many businesses are hesitating to keep clients apprised of new offerings, perhaps afraid that they will appear insensitive to the enormous human suffering that is going on along the United States Gulf coast. The impact of this devastation will undoubtedly continue for years to come, so many business owners are understandably nervous. But of course, life, as well as business, goes on and you must continue to contact existing and potential customers, or risk stormy weather of your own. How can you continue to promote your business, and at the same time, remain sensitive to disastrous events? Just this week, I faced this same problem. We were due to announce a new course offering to our existing subscribers and potential clients. The copy for our email broadcast was already written and ready to go. But I was hearing from colleagues that they were choosing to hold back on promoting their businesseslest they offend their customers. What did we do? We sent the email anywaybut we prefaced it with a statement of concern for those affected by the situation and told our subscribers what we, as a company, were doing about it. Then, we explained why now, more than ever, was the time to take advantage of our offer. The results? Our offering went smoothly, with as large a conversion rate as ever. Will this same strategy work for you? It all dependson your offering, your timing, and your attitude. Here are seven guidelines, when disaster strikes and rough seas abound, to help you decide whether to promote your business: Guideline #1: Dont do it! Consider delaying or canceling altogether a particular promotion. If you feel that advertising your particular product or service would be in poor taste, then by all means, follow your instincts. After the tragic events of 9-11, Arnold Schwarzeneggers movie, Collateral Damage, was postponed for four months and a Jackie Chan movie, Nose Bleed, about a window washer on the World Trade Center who foils a terrorist plot, was cancelled entirely. Guideline #2: Scrap your copy. You may need to completely rewrite your ad copy, making sure your readers understand you are sensitive to the circumstances at hand. Get input from others before you send anything out to customers, to make sure you are on the mark. Guideline #3: Run the ad anyway. But preface it with a statement, as we did, telling your readers exactly what you, as a company, are doing to help. You are helping, arent you? Guideline #4: Use reverse engineering. Let your subscribers know why now is the perfect time to purchase your product or service. But use caution with this one, as this guideline will only work if it truly is the right time for your offering. If this is not the right time, refer back to guideline #1. Guideline #5: Throw out a lifeline. Send out an email announcing a new blog or listserv, especially for your customers, to create a sense of community and give your customers a place to leave comments about their own experiences. Empower your customers by setting up a place at your website where your customers can click to donate money, such as the Red Cross. Guideline #6: Call the doctor. Set up a teleconference bridge line call for your customers and bring in an expert on stress, to speak about how to be resilient in the face of disaster. Your customers will thank you for it, as you will be seen as someone who cares about them for more than their money. The best thing about this guideline is that you will feel good, too. Guideline #7: Dont go down with the ship. Even if the disaster did not affect you directly, you are apt to feel some effects, both physically and mentally. Take some time to reflect on your feelings about what has happened and also remember to pay attention to the basics, like eating right and getting enough sleep. So dont despair! You can still market in the face of disaster, if you use sensitivity, compassion and common sense. Adhering to the seven guidelines can help you steer around submerged obstacles and get you into open water for clear sailing ahead. Copyright, Ellen Britt, 2005.
