Anyone in the world By Geoff Bryant Very soon stocks of new season's roses will be arriving in the garden centres, if they're not already there. Indeed, to be sure of getting the most sought after varieties it may have been necessary to put an order in some time ago. However, in their rush for the new, those who are slaves to fashion often overlook gems, leaving some of the best tried and true plants for those prepared to simply wait and see what is available.
Gallica roses are a case in point. While the popularity of Old Roses waxes and wanes as each new generation discovers them and then seeks something new, the best of them carry on regardless. Rosa gallica, also known as the French Rose or Provins Rose, is a species that grows wild from southern and central Europe to the Caucasus. Because it readily produces sports, has a tendency towards double flowers, and may have hybridised naturally with other species, it is likely that the earliest European garden roses were forms of Rosa gallica.
The earliest recognisable Gallica still grown is 'Officinalis', the Apothecary's Rose. It is a deep pink semi-double thought to have been introduced into France from the Middle East by returning 13th century crusaders. It has even been suggested that 'Officinalis' was the first cultivated rose, though that is impossible to prove. A similar rose was used medicinally and in perfume manufacture in Charlemagne's time, but it can't be traced back beyond around 1200 with any certainty. Nevertheless, 'Officinalis' can be seen in many medieval manuscripts, paintings, and stained glass windows, and while deep pink rather than red, it earned fame in the War of the Roses as the Red Rose of Lancaster. (The White Rose of York was Rosa alba.)
'Rosa Mundi' (syn. 'Versicolor'), which probably dates from the late 16th century, is a very popular sport of 'Officinalis'. It has striped and sectored bicolor white and deep pink flowers, and is thought to have been named after Rosamund, a mistress of Henry II. It may date back to the 13th century or even earlier but can't be traced beyond 1580 with certainty.
Gallicas were at the height of their popularity from the 18th to the mid-19th centuries, and it is from that period that most of today's plants date. Early nurseries kept few records but it is likely that by the early 19th century there were well over 1000 varieties of gallica in cultivation, possibly up to 3000. It is therefore not surprising that several other recognised groups, such as the Damask Roses, have Rosa gallica in their parentage.
Their flowers, which are abundant and often heavily scented, tend toward the pink, red and purple shades. White gallicas are also available and many of the darker flowered types are flecked or otherwise marked with white or pale pink. The flowers appear only in spring and early summer, with perhaps the occasional late bloom, though vivid hips often follow the flowers, providing colour well into autumn. The fleeting beauty of the flowers and the historical connections is certainly why Gallicas tend to be regarded as the most 'romantic' of all the roses. It's not hard to see why. Their beautiful, rather formal shapes with an air of elegance, their textures and colours, so often reminiscent of faded purple velvet, and their fragrance combine to create roses of which memories are made.
The very name Apothecary's Rose conjures up images of alchemy, love potions and the like. Associations with the French aristocracy also enhance the gallica's romantic appeal. Marie-Antoinette had made in 1770 a bed of 'Officinalis' petals and the Empress Josephine so adored Gallicas that her rose gardens at Malmaison were a virtual shrine to the type.
Many nurseries, especially rose specialists, stock a good range of gallicas and as you might expect, those that have survived long enough to still be in production in the 21st century tend to be sturdy, easily grown plants.
In addition to 'Rosa Mundi' and 'Officinalis' look out for 'Charles de Mills' (double, velvety crimson) 'Cardinal de Richelieu' (double, clustered dark purple red flowers), 'Hippolyte' (double, purple, many small flowers), 'Belle de Crcy', 'Tuscany Superb' (double, dark purple-red, very fragrant), 'Duchesse de Buccleugh' (double, deep pink, late), 'Duchesse de Montebello' (double, soft pink), 'Complicata' (single, bright mid-pink, fragrant), 'Nannette' (double, purple-red), 'Anas Sgales' (double, purple-pink, very fragrant), 'Ipsilant' (double, mauve-pink) and 'Gloire de France' (double, purple-pink fading to pale pink edges).
Sure, you could wait until next year and check out the local botanic gardens before making a selection, but take my word for it, gallicas are beautiful. Why not start your own private Malmaison now?
Cultivation tips
Gallicas are very frost hardy and tend to be fairly small bushes with light or bright green that is usually quite lush. They can be bought budded or may be grown on their own roots. Own root plants will produce suckers that help to thicken up the bush and will sometimes even allow them to be grown as a hedge. Removing rooted suckers is an easy way to start new plants, which is probably why Gallicas were such a suitable subject for medieval plant propagators. Summer softwood cuttings under mist are reliable and winter hardwood cuttings outdoors strike quite well.
Their compact habit is easily maintained by light overall trimming and thinning, which can be done in winter or, if keeping the hips is not important, as soon as flowering is finished. You can even trim and shape in summer and winter if necessary. Very old bushes on their own roots may be cut back almost to ground level to encourage vigorous new growth. Gallicas are bristly rather than really thorny, which makes pruning a fairly pain-free experience.
Naturally, you need to keep an eye open for all the traditional pests and diseases of roses, though you needn't expect more trouble with Gallicas than any other roses. Just don't believe those comments you may read that suggest that they are particularly pest- or disease-resistant.
Did you know?
The Greeks and Romans cultivated Rosa gallica, though apart for the odd sport it is unlikely that they grew anything greatly different from the wild form. So should you feel the need to have rose petals strewn in your path in the manner of a Roman emperor, they should be those of Rosa gallica.I am a garden book author and horticultural photographer based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Anyone in the world By Steve Hoogenakker YOUR LANDSCAPE WHAT YOU DONT KNOW COULD KILL MILLIONS Thats right. As a homeowner, youre responsible for millions of living organisms. Youre the Jack Bauer of the show 24 protecting millions of innocent lives! Grass plants, ornamentals, trees, annual flowers and shrubs. Your decisions also affect insect and biotic populations. Most importantly, youre in control of how your landscape affects you and your family personally. The best way to make the most of your living investment is knowledge and of course, action! Lets get started!
Da Lawn
Well start with the lawn. Its very important to have a thick, healthy lawn. Why? My daughter plays soccer and I shudder everytime she gets knocked down. (I never cheer when she knocks someone else down.) When kids play on your lawn, or when elderly residents walk in it, a thick lawn protects their skin and joints. A thick lawn also prevents weeds from coming up, reducing the need for pesticides. So, what can we do in the spring to get there? First, write down your thoughts about last years turf. What improvements would you like to have seen? Then spring into action. If you have a lawn contractor, discuss fertilization options with him/her. Are they applying 2-3 pounds of Nitrogen per year? Nitrogen has a direct relationship to the color of the lawn. If the lawn isnt thick and green, ask them to do a soil test, or you can do one using the easy instuctions on the website. (Cost $15.00 plus postage) Do they use slow release or fast release fertilizer? Quick release fertilizers give the lawn a quick greenup and are cheaper, but they lose their color after 2-4 weeks. If youre getting 3 applications per year, with normal release fert, you get 4 weeks of food and rapid growth followed by 4 weeks of partial starvation. Using slow release feeds gradually, and keeps the lawn growing at a more regular pace. Ask your contractor if he likes double cutting and bagging grass clippings, if he says yes, I might give you a $5.00 gift certificate to Caribou Coffee. When he says no, tell him that using slow release will cut down on rapid flush growth, and cut down the need for a lot of extra labor. Everybody wins! There is bound to be some winter salt or plow damage too. These areas need to be seeded or sodded right away. I recommend bringing black dirt in if needed and if using seed, use blends, such as kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye for sunny areas, and fine fescue, perennial rye and bluegrass for shady areas. If seeding, expect weeds. Crabgrass control cant be applied to these areas unless you use Siduron (Tupersan), but broadleaf controls can be used after the seeded area is mowed twice. Seed or Sod, water a couple of times per day for short periods of time. Da Shrubs
Shrubs need little care in the spring, but make sure that the leaves left over the winter are removed. If you had roses in your own garden, and did the Minnesota Tip , make sure the leaves and covering are removed so the plants dont heat up under their protection.
Clear any areas where bulbs mightve been planted. Da Garden
If you have a personal garden, tis the season to till it up. Consider doing a soil test yourself for best results. Heres a little secret: Why does Miracle Grow grow 700 pound pumpkins? I know you dont actually want a 700 pound pumpkin this fall, but if you want to give your garden every chance of providing pleasure or juicy tomatoes, then the secret is this: Most fertilizers carry 3 ingredients. Even if you ask the U of M, theyll say. Buy a 10-10-10! This is the standard response for anyone in the industry, and it usually works Ok. BUT, there are 16 minerals needed for every plant to survive. Miracle Grow provides all 16! They might not be needed, but if just 1 or 2 are missing or weak your plants will suffer. Da Trees
Make sure that the tree wrap is removed from trees, look for split trunks or damage that mightve happened from the early snow storm or from wind damage. If you know you have Ash Trees, which almost everyone has, there is a terrible menace out there this year. The Emerald Ash Borer. Once its on a property, can kill all the ash trees on a property in 1-3 years. There are links on www.Townhome.Pro. Da Water
Irrigation system startups need to include replacing broken heads, and resetting the direction of heads so they cover the lawn, making sure they dont blow over the freshly washed car and into the bedroom window. If you dont have a system, I would be happy to recommend a professional, or design one myself.. Finally, work with your contractor. Its in his/her best interest to have a wonderful, living landscape too. If your association does a lot of work itself, or if youre just curious, call or write a Master Gardener volunteer. Its free, and the link is on your website that is just being created; www.Townhome.Pro. This article may be reprinted as long as it is not changed in anyway and the links and email addresses are left "as is". Thank You. Ive included a link to www.Townhome.Pro, where Ive added links for your lawn, landscape, trees and garden. This website is dedicated exclusively for MHA members at this time. Anyone in the world By Eric Hartwell The steady, ongoing work produced from wedding photography generates the majority of new clients for most photography studios and freelance photographers. A wedding photographer will need to comfortable with the following activities & skills: Candid shots (photojournalistic) and posed shots
Making slides, prints, and slideshows (digital or otherwise)
Traditional albums
Taking shots in the outdoors at a party, beach, or rustic locale
Snapping shots indoors at a temple or church In the late 1860's in America, couples started hiring photographers and posing at the wedding. The art form of photography for the wedding was created by Joseph Nicphore Nipce in 1826. However, the idea of live action shots and of capturing the event itself came up after the Second World War. Often, the photographers would just show up inconspicuously at a wedding, snap the photos, and venture to sell them later on to the family. This forced studios to start covering the events, lest they be booted out by freelance photographers. After the wedding is over, a small time lapse is incurred, and, thereafter the photographer shows "proofs" to the couple. The proofs can be in the form of prints, thumbnail galleries, or all of the images on CD-ROM. They may also make separate galleries or slideshows, and they're sometimes themed. Photographers may sell additional prints to the couple through a web site with thumbnail galleries and an e-commerce back-end, often in conjunction with a vendor or broker website that charges a commission for each print purchase. The common types of wedding photography include the photojournalistic realism and spontaneous photographer behavior of some, the classic or traditional posed method, and a hybrid of the two called fashion-based wedding photography. In big cities, there are often studios devoted to wedding photography because photography for the wedding is such a mammoth market in metropolitan areas. People are always moving in and out and getting married. Take a look at a portfolio of the photographer's former work for assurance. The Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI), the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), and, especially, the Wedding Photojournalists Association (WPA) offer training, professional support, and tips to member photographers. Anyone in the world By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Taylor]Peter Taylor Uncertainty and unforeseen expenses can knock anybodys door. Individuals with good flow of income can easily handle all the unexpected expense. But, what those individuals will do, who are earning a limited income and also dont have an asset to place it as collateral against the loan amount? In order to handle such situation, they are only needed to avail unsecured tenant loans. Unsecured tenant loans have been designed to cater all the tenants and also those homeowners who are not willing to place collateral. In the sense that in unsecured tenant loans there is no need to place collateral. Being an unsecured loan, there is no collateral but credit score plays a vital role while availing such loan. Even though, bad credit scorers can avail unsecured tenant loan. But, it has been observed that good credit scorers are always offered with competitive rates. So, it is always good to have good credit score. Unsecured tenant loans carry competitive rates but are higher than secured loans. However, an individual doesnt feel the burden of paying such high interest rate because they are repaid within short span of time. It also carries an importance as from where to avail unsecured tenant loans. There are many banks, financial institutions and building societies who offer such loans. Choosing among them, offering the most competitive rate is not at all an easy task. But, it becomes easy by means of negotiating and researching. Unsecured tenant loans being a part of personal loans, usually are used to satisfy personal desires such as paying bills, consolidating debts etc. An amount which can be borrowed in the tenant loan is generally small and basically depends upon factors like credit score and repaying ability. Repaying ability is determined by taking into account certain factors like flow of income, employment and his financial status. An individual with stable flow of income and sound financial status can borrow larger amounts and with competitive rates. While availing loan from the lender, it is suggested to ask for the loan quote which is provided free of cost. Loan quotes contain all the details of the cost involved in the deal. By means of loan quote, one can easily compare all the offers of unsecured tenant loans. And, finally, choose the one who offers most competitive annual percentage rate as it also helps in making easy repayments. Unsecured tenant loans solve the financial problem of all the tenants and also help them in fulfilling their desires. Anyone in the world By Gail Martin Small businesses worry about marketing. Spending money on marketing makes a business owner anxiouswhat if it doesnt generate returns? Not spending money can also make a business owner nervouswhat if customers dont know about the company? It can be tough enough to generate profits, reinvest in the company and make payroll (even if you only have to pay yourself). Marketing often gets left off the list when a small company runs out of time, money or energy. But marketing does not have to be expensive. Here are five things you can start doing tomorrow to market your business that dont cost a lot of moneyand can pay valuable returns. Tip # 1: Carry your cards. Dont leave home without your business cards. A neighbor you see in line at the dry cleaner or a business acquaintance you meet at the grocery store could be a potential customer. Without your cards, you put yourself at the mercy of their memory. Make your business cards work for youcarry them and be ready to share them at all times. Tip #2: Have an elevator speech. An elevator speech is a thirty-second description of what your company does. Its name comes from the idea that you should be able to explain your business in the time it takes to go up one floor with someone in an elevator. In three or four sentences, explain what your company does, what makes it unique, how you meet your customers needs and who your customer is. For example, here is my elevator speech: DreamSpinner Communications provides exceptional writing, public relations and marketing services to companies and non-profits of all sizes. We are affordable for small businesses. We help you tell your story in a way that boosts your business. We work with clients on a project or ongoing basis depending on their needs. With a good elevator speech, you wont be stuck when someone asks, And what does your company do? Tip #3: Ask for referrals. Your current customers are your best sales force. Are you asking them for referrals or leaving it up to chance? Give out business cards with every sale and say, If youre happy with our service today, please tell your friends. Customers may not be comfortable giving out a friends email or phone number, but will pass along a card. Tip #4: Stay in touch with your current customers. Studies show that 80 percent of most companys business comes from 20 percent of their customers. Its also cheaper to keep an existing customer than to obtain a new client. If your current customers could utilize more of your services or use your services more often, youre missing an opportunity. Create reasons to remind them. Email newsletters avoid mailing costs and can provide an inexpensive way to let current and recent customers know about new services, current promotions and upcoming events. Tip #5: Go someplace new. You are the best salesperson for your company. If you stay behind your desk, your company loses out. Make a promise to yourself to go to one new business event each month. Most organizations list upcoming events in the newspaper, and nearly all allow newcomers to try them out. For the price of lunch, you can meet people outside your usual circle of contacts, learn something new and expand your network. Be sure to brush up your elevator speech and take lots of business cards! Effective marketing starts with the personal touch. If your marketing budget is limited, a little sweat equity investment of time can get the phones ringing. Making a small investment to discuss business goals and inexpensive/do-it-yourself marketing techniques with a marketing professional can pay off by helping you identify new possibilities. Good books on grassroots marketing techniques are at the library and can provide new ideas. Realize that your marketing is limited only by your imaginationnot your budget. Try these tips for starters and heat up your marketing! Gail Z. Martin owns DreamSpinner Communications and helps companies in the U.S. and Canada tell the Real Story of their business through exceptional writing and marketing. Anyone in the world By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Shezz_P] Shezz P There are a few side effects of anti-depressant medication, most are more of a nuisance than actual dangerous side effects. Side effects may include: Nausea
Dizziness
Insomnia
Headache
Dry Mouth
Blurred Vision
Altered Bowel Function
Teeth Grinding
Jaw Clenching Some side effects only occur for the first week or two, mainly the nausea and dizziness, once your body adjusts to the medication these side effects usually disappear. Although in many cases medication will be started on a low dose and gradually increased over time until your GP feels you are at the correct dose needed. These symptoms can re-occur each time the dose is increased. Insomnia is quite a common side effect of anti-depressant medication and because of this it is best to take the medication in the mornings with breakfast. If taken in the morning insomnia should not be a problem. Personally I suffered the nausea and dizziness each time my medication was increased and also when it was decreased. It soon passed though and was not a major issue. The side effect that has been the most annoying for me personally is the teeth grinding and jaw clenching. This has affected me to the extent that I have problems with my teeth and problems with my jaw bones and my ears. I get lock jaw which can be quite painful and I can have problems with my jaw locking and/or hurting when eating hard foods. I also suffer from headaches caused from the constant jaw clenching, it can affect the muscles in your face, head and neck and because the joints of the jaw bone are near the ears I have problems with my ears feeling blocked and having to 'pop' them all the time. I have had a mouth guard made to fit to try and relieve the jaw clenching although I haven't found this all that successful, I just clench on that, and even though it was made to fit, I still find it quite uncomfortable. I have found probably the most effective in relieving the jaw clenching is relaxation. Yoga is good and also jaw and facial exercises. I have reduced my medication slightly as the higher the dose the worse the jaw clenching was and it got to an extent that the effects from the jaw clenching were making me more depressed and kind of defeated the whole purpose of being on medication. So I have reduced the dose just enough that it has reduce the jaw problem a bit but am still having the benefits of the medication also. So if side effects of anti-depressants are to an extent that you can't cope with them, see your GP, you can change your doses (under GP supervision of course) until you get the right dose to help with the side effects, or even try a different medication, some effects vary with different medications. Also try relaxation such as yoga or exercise to help with side effects. Shezz P

Anyone in the world By Jasmine Yap What is Botox? Listen to Dr. Andrew Weil ( Harvard Medical doctor ) He is Oprah Winfrey's and Larry King's physician and possibly the most-respected doctor in America. Dr. Weil says: "Botox is Botulism Toxin (poison) and works by paralyzing facial muscles. It only works for 3 months and then you need more injections. If too much of it is injected (or injected into the wrong areas), you can end up with droopy eyelids that will stay that way for weeks. Other side effects are headaches, respiratory infections, flu-like symptoms, nausea, and pain in the face." The FDA has only approved Botox for use on an extremely limited area (less than 5% of your entire face). That area is the tiny little space where sometimes there is a furrow between your eyebrows. You can't use Botox ANYWHERE ELSE! Treatment costs about $700 per treatment and the patient need a new treatment every 90 days! How if i tell you can Look as much as 20-years younger, without using Botox Treatment? The most natural ingredient for anti wrinkle cream is made from something called "emu oil". This is the best triple-refined emu oil in the world. And, an extra ingredient is added to it while it is being made into a cream. This extra ingredient is a suspension of superfine silicon dioxide nanoprisms (from the fractionated silicon dioxide) which has been "fractionated" instead of powderized. That means instead of turning into flakes when it is processed turns into billions of Microscopic Three-Dimensional Nanoprisms. This effect will last until you wash your face and the invisible silicon dioxide is removed, it turns out emu oil is probably the best cosmetic ingredient in the world. That's because its molecules are much smaller than the molecules in human skin. What is Emu Oil and how its related to wrinkle cream? Emu oil was found by Aborigines many thousands of years ago as a skin moisturizer, antiseptic, and as an aid in the relief of sunburn, muscular aches and joint anguish, as well as helping in the healing of injuries. The emu oil is rendered from a thick layer of fat on the back yielding five - seven liters of unsaturated, non-toxic, highly penetrating oil. Across 10 years of research done at World wide Canyon Ranch (Texas) has revealed that the emu oil has unique thermodynamic properties. Combined with more ingredients, the oil can be utilized to machine stainless steel much even more rapidly, so considerable savings in labor results. The combination of Emu oil and Nanoprisms can penetrate down through Seven Layers of Human Skin! This makes it the best moisturizer in the world. Anyone in the world By Peter Portero Even though some people feel that newspaper dating ads are a thing of the past, you can still find a great companion that way. In recent years, it seems that the older crowd is using these classifieds more than the younger crowd. And the reason for this is that younger people spend most of their time on the internet, so they also use the internet in order to find dates. Older people who are not as familiar with the internet tend to use the newspaper classifieds in order to find dates. Before the advent of the internet this was the king of the dating world. If you did not want to venture out into the world to find a date, you would answer personal ads in your local newspaper. And believe it or not this method worked for a lot of people. And it still does. Placing an ad in the newspaper is a great way to meet new people. All you need to do is write up a brief profile and send it to the paper. The cost of running an ad is usually very small, and well worth the investment. If you are not having luck online, try newspaper classifieds. This is a tried and true method of dating! Anyone in the world By Karin I Manning Your first kiss with a new partner is something that will stick in your mind for years to come. If it’s “The one” it will probably stick in your mind forever. It’s important that your first kiss be truly memorable for the right reason. When you meet a person you really like your first kiss is always going to be nerve wracking. It’s perfectly normal and, in fact, expected to have butterflies in the pit of your stomach when you first kiss someone you really are crazy about. Here are some simple first kiss tips and first kiss advice that will ensure your first kiss is truly magical. There are no hard and fast rules about who should kiss first. It’s more important to make sure it’s something you both want and that you are not in a rush when you do kiss for the first time. Your first kiss with a new partner should be done in private, and in an environment where you are less likely to be interrupted by any family and friends. It is important to remember that your first kiss with a new person may not be as smooth or as romantic as you would have liked. Your partner may not be a very good kisser first off. But that’s okay. You can take up the challenge yourself to teach your love interest the delightful art of kissing on a daily basis with these same kissing tips mentioned here. When you are thinking of making the move to a first kiss make sure you regularly brush your teeth and have either mint lollies or chewing gum always handy to ensure your breath smells fresh and tastes fresh and inviting. If you want your first kiss to be memorable for both of you make sure you are both sober to enjoy it. Your first kiss is the scariest. If you are nervous, chances are that your love interest is also nervous. You can tell a lot about a person about the way they kiss. It is important to build yourself up and to focus on enjoying your first kiss experience as soon as possible. Your first kiss together will be the most nerve wracking. After you get over the initial anticipation and onset of nerves you can then concentrate on making your kissing encounters as hot, sexy and delicious as possible. Chances are that seconds into your first kiss you will start to feel more relaxed and confident. Bear in mind that you don’t have to kiss anyone until they are 100 percent ready. There is no time limit. You are not Cinderella and you are not going to turn into a pumpkin if you haven’t kissed by midnight. Don’t let anyone pressure you into doing something that you are not ready for. Also, never kiss a person that you don’t feel is ready for your kiss. It’s much more exciting to build up the anticipation until you are both ready than risking rejection and being seen as too forward or pushy. While your first kiss together is fantastic, it’s all the kisses that follow that will make your pulse race, your heart stop and take your breath away. Remember that in time your memories fade but the memory of your first kiss together will linger forever. You may remember what you were wearing or how they smelt or what you both ate. But what you will definitely remember is the feeling you had all through your body when your lips touched theirs and you shared your first intimate moment together. Wait! Anyone in the world By John R. Haughton pH Is The Most Important Factor In Aquaculture. What Is pH? pH is the term used to assess the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. This acidity or alkalinity is determined by measuring the concentration of Hydrogen ions in the solution. This normally falls between 10 0 and 10-14 gram-equivalents per litre. In order to simplify this, a scale of values between 0 and 14 has been adopted. This pH scale is a measurement of how strongly the electrical charges hold the atoms and molecules of substances within the solution together. The higher the concentration of positively charged ions, the lower the value is on the scale and the higher the concentration of negatively charged ions the greater the pH value. Hydrogen (H+) has a positive charge while the hydroxides (OH-) have a negative charge. Pure water has a value of 7.0 so it is easy to see that water must be H-OH or more commonly H2O. The decimal points on the scale are very important because each whole number is approximately 10 times greater (or less) than the next whole number. So pH 2.0 is 1000 times stronger than pH5. The greater the concentration of Hydrogen ions in the solution the more acidic it is said to be and the lower its pH on the scale. The greater the number of hydroxide ions the greater the alkalinity (or basicity) it is said to have and the higher its pH. If we look at the structure of the pH scale, we can see that it goes from 0 (very strong acid) to 7 (neutral) and then to 14.0(very strong Base or Alkali). If we mix an acidic solution with an alkaline one, providing that the positions on the scale are equidistant from the neutral value of 7.0, we will end up with a neutral solution. This is because the positive charges will be cancelled out by the negative ones. If however we use differing positions on the scale, then the resulting imbalance will give us a solution with either acidic or basic properties depending on which side had the greater distance from the neutral value. But Why Is This So Important? All of the chemicals in the solution have differing electrical charges because each of them is made up of different combinations of elements and ionic values. As they are all competing for the exchange of charged particles, a huge electrical battle is constantly raging within the solution. This constant exchange of positive and negative charges surrounds the plants root system and it is this that allows it to absorb the vital nutrients needed for its growth. You can think about the chemical battle being a bit like a moving 3D jigsaw puzzle, with the positive and negative charges all having to combine in the correct shape and order. The plant can only absorb those bits that fit into its own bits, like a lock and key. As the levels of pH change, so the jigsaw bits alter and no longer open the lock. In fact the plant itself will, at times, alter its own internal cellular pH in order to either slow down or speed up certain enzyme reactions. It is vitally important that the pH of the nutrient used in the hydroponic system matches the plants own internal pH as closely as possible, otherwise this chemical exchange cannot take place. The main chemicals within the solution, Sodium (Na+), Phosphorous (P+), Calcium (Ca+) and Potassium (K+), together with all the other elements will affect the efficiency of each nutrients absorption through the root walls. Different species of plant prefer different pH values. The three main things that affect the pH that a plant prefers are: 1 The pH of the water used.
Your water will not be pure and so will contain charged ions either from deliberately introduced contaminants or from environmentally absorbed ones like Calcium Carbonate from passing through limestone and Sulphurs from acid rain. 2 The growing medium that you are using.
Rockwool is over pH 7.0, Peat Moss below 6.0 and hardened expanded clay is 7.59. 3 The nutrient you are using.
Nutrients can be mixed in lots of different ways, forming various combinations of elements and so giving a wide variation in pH. Because these chemical combinations behave in different ways they give up their elements to the plant at differing pH values. Therefore the nutrient preferred by the plant determines which the best pH value for that species is. Copyright (C) 2004, 2005, 2006.
