Anyone in the world By Troy Myers Making glow in the dark candles is fun, easy and neat to do. A great project to do with the kids on a cold rainy day this is fun for all age groups. Kids love to create and there is a lot of room to create here. I will approach this article and break it down into steps. First Step, Supervision I do not recommend letting children do this by themselves. You will be working with hot materials and perhaps a stove to melt your gel. So be very available. Besides it is really about spending time with them for you, and about learning for them. Also, candles can be inherently dangerous due to the fire portion of it. Suggest that they make them and send it Uncle Bob and Aunt Martha as a present which show them how fun giving is.You do not want them burning them in their room. If they want to make one for themselves here is an easy solution do not put a wick in it and call them the wickless candle for kids You can also put fragrance in them. Many people call the wickless candles, air fresheners. It is the same stuff. You can put a bunch of fragrance in it and it covers up the smelly sneaker smell in their room. There is a caution on using the fragrance which we will cover. Second Step, Materials If you do not plan on making a bunch of these I suggest getting a kit from your local crafts store. You are going to be making gel candles and that is what you should ask for when you look for them. The kit should include the following. Candle gel, Glass containers, candle thermometer, wicks and complete instructions. It will probably also come with things called embeds. Almost all of these premade kits are aquatic themed meaning. You will get a fish, a seashell and some sand. You can get great info at www.candletech.com if you want to make more. It is endless what you can do with this type of candle making. I have found them to be very helpful and informative. Also you will need a couple of pots or metal pans to melt your gel. Third Step, Preparation Clean off a kitchen table. Like with all crafts you need room for all this creating. Gel candle making is a lot like cooking. It is all about timing, good ingredients and you must be a little patient. Forth Step, Execution 1)Have the kids break up the gel into little pieces and place it in your melting pot. This lets the kids get their hands into it and it feels gooey. No real mess for mom. Some candle makers recommend using a double boiler system. What that means is you have a large pan with water in it and bring it to a boil then take a pot with the gel in it and place that in the boiling water. The water can not get hotter than 220 deg F because that is boiling point. That way you never have an issue with the gel catching on fire from being to hot. You do not want the gel getting hotter than 200 deg. That is why you always use your candle thermometer. You really do not need to heat your gel any higher than 180 for this application. DO NOT USE A MICROWAVE TO HEAT YOUR GEL!!! The safest easiest way to melt your gel is to get a Presto pot. The Presto Pot is given that name for obvious reasons. This is a great way melt you gel and not have the mess. Plus they are very inexpensive at around $30.00 and you can reuse it make and make more candles or air fresheners. Or melt regular wax for conventional candles. 2) Next you need to place your wick into the glass container. Dip the tab end of your wick in the hot gel let is stand for a couple of seconds and cool then place in the bottom of the glass container so adheres to the glass. Place it in the middle. I suggest you push down on the tab with a pencil to make it stick to the glass good. 3) Into the melted gel pour the GloNation glow in the dark powder. One ounce will make one pound of gel glow like crazy. You at this time can add gel coloring and fragrance. You should only use fragrance that is made for gel candles. This is important! And do not use too much. Read how much to add from any good gel candle making web site. You need to stir this mixture to circulate the glow powder into the gel. Use a heat resistant spatula from the local dollar store. Pour the gel into the glass container with the wick. Remember it is hot so be careful. Do not let the kids do this! Probably not the same ones you had a week or two ago. I can speak of the Ruby-throated, because that is what I have. Ruby-throated is the most populated hummer and more then likely out numbers all others combined. Males start migration as early as late July or early August. You know, They did their part (breed) so why stick around. The adult female and juveniles are juicing up and on the move. If you notice, the birds look like they could give birth at any time. Hummers need to fatten up before they take off. A hummer will double in weight before heading out. There is nothing we do that keeps them hanging around longer. The length of day dictates departure-- not temperatures or food sources. In fact, this is the most bountiful time for food. Hummers need nectar for energy and insects for protein. They need the nectar to catch bugs! Right now there is plenty of nectar and a plethora to chose from on the meat market. So, you now know that keeping your feeders out does not encourage a bird to stay. In fact, you should keep your hummer feeders out a good week or two after your last sighting, just in case there is a straggler or two. Juveniles haven't made the flight south before, they just know they have to do this to survive. Often both sexes of the juveniles look much like the female. However, my observations show the youngsters are a bit smaller.This season, I had a young male that was darker and had a clear ruby blotch for a gorget. Sometimes a young male will appear to have a 5 o'clock shadow. Isn't Nature wonderful? If you take your feeders down to early, you miss out on these winged marvels and they won't stop on the trip next spring. Banded records show hummers take the exact same route year after year. Stop at the exact same feeders and often on the same day.Starvation is the main cause of death during migration, so keep on keeping on. You may have several hummers at a given time, bless you if you do. But, hummers are not a social bird like most birds. They do not form flocks. It's each bird for him/her self. They take off on their own and arrive on their own. (There is no safety in numbers or the cover of darkness). This time of year hummers will tolerate each other at the feeders. They are on the move and aren't protecting a territory. A hummer may travel 20 to 30 miles a day.That means the hummingbird I see today, will be
in Indiana or Illinois next week. The hummer I see later on, will have come from maybe Michigan's upper peninsula or parts of Ontario, Canada. Most of the hummers that migrate from Canada and the United states will end up in Mexico and parts of Latin America. More and more Rubies are finding parts of Texas, the Gulf coast and parts of the Southern Atlantic coast as a winter home. Rufus Hummingbirds are showing up more often in these places for winter as well. Why do these birds stay? Well, it could be young that haven't figured it all out. Some experts think it could be too much competition with all the others that migrate and native hummers. I think the loss of habitat plays a big role here. Habitat is disappearing at an alarming rate in these developing countries. Or, maybe they like the legendary Southern hospitality! Here it is almost Christmas, and Hanukkah is a mere week and a half away! Oh what to knit in a hurry! If you're like me, you tend to do some holiday things ahead of time, and some tasks are left for "when I have more time." Right! Little, easy knitted gifts can be worked up in no time, and are always appreciated by whomever is lucky enough to receive them. So, the next time you are sitting in front of the TV, get knitting! For my last easy-as-pie knitting gift, I have a special Christmas pattern. It's for a knitted stocking ornament and can be knit in a few hours. Use them on your tree or for package decorations! Loop a dozen or so together for a merry Christmas garland. Whatever you can think up, you can't go wrong. I know you have lots of leftover yarn just waiting to be used somewhere! Well, here's a great way to put that yarn to good use. Here's the pattern: Knitted Stocking Ornament Size 2 needles, small amounts of red, white and/or green yarn. (If size 2 is too small, go up a size or two.) Cast on 18 stitches using the white yarn. Knit one row, purl one row, knit one row. Cut the white yarn leaving enough yarn to sew up the white part or make a loop. Using the red or the green yarn, beginning with a row of knit stitches, knit twelve rows of stockinette stitch. The twelfth row should be a purl row. 13th Row: Knit across twelve stitches. Turn the work and purl across six stitches. Work nine more rows on the center six stitches. The last row will be knit. With the right side facing you, pick up and knit five stitches down the side of the "foot". Knit the six stitches to the end of the row. Turn the work. Knit across the six stitches at the beginning of the row, the five stitches that you just picked up and knit and the six "middle" stitches. Pick up and knit five stitches on the remaining side of the "foot". Knit across the last six stitches. 28 stitches should be on the needle. Knit in garter stitch for three more rows. The last row: Knit across fourteen stitches. Turn the halves of the sock right sides together. Weave the stitches together and sew up the back of the stocking. Make a loop and hang it up. These stockings are easy to knit, and you can make as many as you like! These are also great for children or small groups and for those non-knitters in your life, they will always be amazed at what knitting talent you have! Since we learn our identity largely through social definition, it would be much wiser to say "You are such a good boy, that you needn't do this "troublesome" behavior. Behind every attempt to correct a behavior we are shaping how the person secretly views themself. She regularly focused on how "little" this (at the time nearly-300-pound!) being was. This is something a caring ally or partner can do for you that you may not be capable of doing for yourself! And it is powerful. It is supportive. It sparks hope where desperation once dominated. Debbie noticed that I was not terribly tall, and was small-boned (underneath the weight). She focused on my little wrists and small feet, and consistently visualized the real me, while ignoring the visible (obviously-huge) me. This is similar to the religious idea that man (ego self) sees the exterior of things, while God (our higher self) looks upon the heart, seeing the inner truth of matters. Anyway you view it, it is a blessing. Debbie would often affectionately say things like, "You're such a tiny being." Something I had never heard and never imagined. This well hidden truth-in-waiting helped me become that real me which she could see all along. I was understandably fixated on how excessively large I was, and her focusing on my smallness, when I could not, meant the world to my own hope and self-esteem. To be praised for being small gave me the strength to become smaller. My own "honest and reality-based" focus on my overweight had become a deterrent to change. This is Shakespeare's brilliant secret to the "The Taming of the Shrew." The shrew symbolizes the angry, negative, demanding voices within us all, and especially within the addict or alcoholic (with which the play begins). "The Taming of the Shrew" is Shakespeare's instruction manual for correcting addictions. Petruchio tames the shrewish, loud, and angry Kate by never once responding to the noisy exterior that no one else can manage to ignore. He only speaks to her opposite, gentle and loving self (very well) hidden within; until, in time, it emerges into the light of day. And, by the way, the opposite, not so lovely self that is hidden within her "perfect" sister also emerges in the end. While seriously overweight, I had a very small person (or given my weight maybe a few of them!) hidden within. Forgoing the obvious exterior and focusing on the unrealized positive self hidden within and waiting to emerge can sometimes help more than apparent truth. Believing in our buried selves can help them see the light of day.
